Run, then fun, on Feb. 5

Posted in Uncategorized on January 10, 2011 by socaltrackclub

So Cal Track Club’s distance-oriented members – especially the men’s 40s and 50s members who ran the Southern California Association Championships – are encouraged to sign up for the USA Cross Country Championships, Saturday, Feb. 5, at Mission Bay Park in San Diego.

Following the races, the club’s annual awards dinner and potluck will be held at Mark Cleary’s home in Rancho Santa Margarita, roughly halfway between San Diego and Los Angeles.

Here’s the order of races: 9:45 Masters Women’s 8 km; 10:45 Masters Men’s 8 km; 1:15 p.m. Open Women’s 8 km; 2 p.m. Open Men’s 12 km.

Mark is trying to field men’s and women’s teams in both the 40-49 and 50-59 age groups, and possibly the men’s 60-69.

Find all the entry information here:

At 6 p.m. that day, we can start descending on Mark’s home for perhaps the noncompetitive highlight of our club’s year: the awards dinner. Please e-mail Mark ( to RSVP and say what you plan to bring to feed the horde. We need main dishes, salads, appetizers, desserts and drinks.

McPhie joins So Cal’s ranks in the Masters T-F Hall of Fame

My apologies for the oversight, but perhaps the biggest news involving So Cal Track Club coming out of the National Convention last month was the election of our 96-year-old superstar Leland McPhie to the Masters Track Hall of Fame.

Two So Cal race walkers, Kathleen Frable and Jolene Steigerwalt, were nominated for the Hall of Fame.

McPhie, who won seven gold medals at the 2010 Masters Nationals in Sacramento, became the ninth So Cal member to join the Hall of Fame. Other honorees include Johnnye Valien (2002), Tom Patsalis (2003), Nolan Shaheed (2004), Vicky Bigelow (2005),  Miriam Gordon, Sumi Onodera-Leonard and Avery Bryant (2006) and George Cohen (2009).

Congratulations, Leland.

Cleary retains Masters T/F post with USATF’s Southern California Assn.

Mark Cleary was reelected chairman of Masters Track and Field during the Annual Meeting of the USATF Southern California Association, held Jan. 8 in Downey.

Cleary’s nomination was approved by acclamation of the small contingent of Masters athletes who attended the meeting.

Cleary’s other position with the SCA — vice president for all Masters running (track, cross-country, LDR and mountain/ultra) — was not up for election this year.

Andrew Hecker, an athlete, USATF official and meet director, was elected chair of Masters cross-country after So Cal Track Club’s  Barry Givens declined not to run for another term.

Cleary also is a member of the USATF Masters Executive Committee and is coordinator of the organization’s Masters Invitational Program, whereby select Masters competitions are conducted as exhibitions at Open national championships and other select Open meets.

Happy New Year. Write a check

Posted in Uncategorized on January 7, 2011 by socaltrackclub

Hi, everybody,

Well, Spring may be the season of renewal, but, around here, we get started a little early.

Before you get your credit card bill for Christmas is the mail, please jot off a check for $50, payable to So Cal Track Club, for your 2011 membership. Please mail the check to Mark Cleary/18 Charca/RSM Calif., 92688.

This is going to be a wild year for Masters track. I don’t know if the outdoor World Championships have ever been on the West Coast, but this July’s WMA meet in Sacramento will probably lure anyone who can run, walk or crawl. You should be one of them. Not long after the Worlds will be the USATF Masters Outdoor Nationals

So, after renewing your So Cal TC membership, check and see if you’ve re-upped with USA Track & Field for 2011. You can renew here.
